More tales coming soon ... check back often! Do as I say or I will send a gargoyle to perch over your door! Remember, gargoyles can ward off evil or feast on a tasty people-sized snack.
Sightings of real-life gargoyles, creatures of flesh and blood, have been reported throughout the centuries all around the globe. Author David Domine, in his book "Haunts of Old Louisville," writes of a strange, winged creature described as half-human and half-demon and known in local lore as the Demon Leaper in an area of Old Louisville (KY) once known as Millionaire's Row.
Accounts handed down from one generation to the next describe the creature as "a frightening, gargoyle-type thing with dark wings and a hooked beak." In the chapter "The Walnut Street Baptist Church," several more eyewitness accounts use descriptions such as "a pair of massive, prehistoric-looking wings," and "black wings that looked webbed...pointed chin...claws or talons."
Internet research even revealed a September 12, 1880 article in the NY Times entitled "An Aerial Mystery" describing "a marvelous apparition" seen near Coney Island. This 'mystery' describes a man with bat-wings and "improved" frog's legs that "waved his wings in answer to the whistle of a locomotive."
Real-life gargoyle encounters have been described in many ways. Should you have one--try to be pure of heart and stout of mind. Remember, MOST gargoyles are made only of stone...not bat-wings and frog's legs!
Happy gargoyle hunting! Seen a living gargoyle? Share your tales....
